Pretoria to miasto w Republice Południowej Afryki, administracyjna stolica tego państwa.

Miałe ścięcie zobaczyć to miasto pod koniec maja 2009. Czy wiecie, że w marcu 2005 roku władze lokalne zmieniły nazwę miasta na Tshwane (w jednym z dialektów narzeczy znaczy także “wszyscy jesteśmy równi”), a w maju zmianę zaakceptował południowoafrykański Komitet Nazw Geograficznych. Jednak aby nazwa ta oficjalnie uległa zmianie, musi na nią wyrazić zgodę jeszcze rząd RPA, który dotychczas tego nie uczynił i nie wiadomo czy uczyni ze względu na bardzo duże kontrowersje związane z tą zmianą.
Miasto położone jest w północno-wschodniej części kraju na wyżynie Bushveld (1360 m n.p.m.), w prowincji Gauteng, 50 km na północ od Johannesburga.

Liczba mieszkańców: 1,3 mln

Warto wiedzieć, że Pretoria została założona w roku 1855 przez Martinusa Pretoriusa, nazwana tak na cześć jego ojca, burskiego polityka Andriesa Pretoriusa, który stał się bohaterem po pokonaniu Zulusów w bitwie nad Blood River.

W roku 1860 Pretoria została stolicą Transwalu. W czasie drugiej wojny burskiej Pretoria została opanowana przez Brytyjczyków. Od roku 1910 pełniła funkcję stolicy Unii Poludniowej Afryki (od 1961- RPA).

The Cradle of Humankind is a World Heritage Site first named by UNESCO in 1999. It’s situated about 50 kilometres northwest of Joburg, South Africa in the province of Gauteng. This site currently occupies 183 square miles (474 km²). There is to be scanned by visitors a complex of limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, where the 2.3-million year-old fossil of Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed ” Mrs. Ples”) was found in 1947 by Dr Roberts Broom and John Robinson, as well as the Wonder Cave. The find helped corroborate the 1924 discovery of the juvenile Australopithecus africanus skull, “Taung Child“, by Raymond Dart, at Taung in the North West Province of South Africa, where excavations still continue.

In 1935 Robert Broom found the first ape-man fossils at Sterkfontein and began work at this site. In 1938 a young schoolboy, Gert Terrblanche, brought Raymond Dart fragments of a skull from nearby Kromdraai which later were identified as Paranthropus robustus. Also in 1938 a single ape-man tooth was found at the Coopers site between Kromdraai and Sterkfontein. In 1948 Robert Broom identified the first hominin remains from Swartkrans cave. The oldest controlled use of fire was also discovered at Swartkrans and dated to over 1 million years ago.

In 1994 Andre Keyser discovered fossil hominids at the site of Drimolen. In 1997 Kevin Kuykendall and Colin Menter of the University of the Witwatersrand found two fossil hominid teeth at the site of Gondolin. Also in 1997, the near-complete Australopithecus skeleton of ” Little Foot“, dating to around 3.3 million years ago (although more recent dates suggest it is closer to 2.5 million years ago), was discovered by Ron Clarke. In 2001 Steve Churchill of Duke University and Lee Berger found early modern human remains at Plovers Lake. Also in 2001 the first hominid fossils and stone tools were discovered in-situ at Coopers.

Thus on the humanoid fossils now we can watch one of the most interesting museums in the world showing us how the Earth became the planet as we see it nowadays, how and what way the humankind appeared.

What struck me the most whilst coming through the numerous halls and boxes there in the museum is the Earth Population Counter which shows how many people are living in the planet and how many do appear every single second thus multiplying the huge number of people on the Earth which at that time was 6.610.257.645, and that every single moment of blinking thousands of news people’s lives appear again and again!

It’s really worth visiting the Cradle of Humandkind museum there!

Johannesburg (zwane także Joburg i eGoli – miejsce złota) – miasto w północno-wschodniej części RPA, od 1994 stolica prowincji Gauteng w zagłębiu Witwatersrand w RPA.

Według danych z 2001 roku miasto zamieszkuje 3 225 812 mieszkańców. Obszar metropolitalny obejmuje 6,2 mln mieszkańców a niektóre źródła podają że może ich być nawet 7,9 mln. Jest to trzecie największe miasto Afryki (po Kairze i Lagos) i największe miasto RPA i najbardziej niebezpieczne miasto na świecie!!!.

Czy wiecie, że Johannesburg będzie jednym z gospodarzy Mistrzostw Świata w Piłce Nożnej 2010 w RPA???
